Have you ever heard of a crochet kit club subscription? I hadn’t until this summer and I have been crocheting for a long time. I decided to give one a try and was not disappointed! I tried Annie’s Crochet Kit club but I am sure there are other’s out there. Let me know if you have tried one and like it. I’m really into it!

One of the purposes of this blog is to give me the constructive accountability to focus on refilling my cup. I tend to give, give, give, and empty my tank, while ignoring any of my own needs. This is my preference. I LOVE to do for my people, however I’m like everyone else and require some time to do things that bring myself joy every now and then. This post is to highlight the way I’ve been doing that lately and hopefully I’ll be able to post some progression info soon.

I have pretty tame hobbies for the most part. I like learning new things, cooking, crochet/knitting, and getting physical. I also really enjoy traveling but I don’t get to do that as often as I’d like. Lately I’ve been tying a lot of knots and using a fun app to learn piano. More on the piano to come.

Tying knots

I learned to knit and crochet in my twenties. I prefer crochet over knitting only because it’s easier for me to keep up with one hook rather than two needles. When I’m sitting on the couch I like to keep my hands busy. I have made scarves, beanies, blankets, wash cloths, countless baby gifts, and it’s always been very rewarding. I’m not a particularly artistic person but I really enjoy creating something so crochet really scratches that creative itch. This has also provided hours of entertainment while waiting on my kids at their various activities.

My Aunt Lunette, who sews, crochets, and quilts her heart out, recently turned me onto something that I knew would be a great way to get me back into crochet and keep me on a schedule I could manage. While visiting her in Tennessee this summer, she showed me all the projects she’d been working on. She had made several beautiful crochet blankets that displayed rows of different stitches and designs. They looked incredibly intricate but she seemed to think it was no big deal. She is so talented!

Crocheting a blanket takes a long time. Its thousands of knots and while crochet can be very forgiving, it does take a good bit of skill and patience to complete something large like a blanket. She had done several so I was gushing over her work and she mentioned each one was a kit she worked on each month over the course of a year. By the end of 12 months she would complete a blanket and gift it to one of her children or family members. I was intrigued!

I have had plenty of started but never completed crochet projects over the years, but this kit sounded perfect to keep me engaged at the right level. I also love that all the materials would be mailed to me so I wasn’t left with making any decisions about what yarn to use, what texture, what pattern, etc. If you aren’t familiar with my blog, I get lost in the perpetual poppycock of my head a lot and can’t make a decision to save my life. So, to find a project that has made most of the decisions for me is AMAZING.

Aunt Lunette told me about Annie’s Crochet Kit club. For the kit, you pick a pattern and subscribe to the project. You choose the length of time you want your project to take and then you will receive the materials and instructions in the mail at a frequency to keep you on pace for that timeline. Wow! I know this sounds silly but this is HUGE for someone like me who seems to suffer from adult onset ADHD and struggles with the perpetual poppycock my brain spews anytime I try to DO ANYTHING.

I chose to do the 12 month kit for a cream colored blanket and started it 3 months ago! It’s so fun! Each month I get the yarn, crochet hook, and instructions I need to complete 3 sections of the blanket. Each section is about 7-10 rows. The kit comes with videos I can watch for extra help explaining the project or stitch I don’t know, so if I get stuck, I always have help.

One of the coolest parts of this is that each month’s package is exactly the right amount of engagement for me. It isn’t an overwhelming amount of work. Sometimes the stitches are super easy and I’m done in 2 days with the entire month’s work. Other times it might take me the whole month, working one row at a time. It just depends on my availability and the intricacy of the work, but there is zero pressure because the amount of work is just right for the month. I know that when I get to the fall next year, I’ll have a beautiful blanket that will bring me so much joy knowing I made it. It has been a great experience so far!

I highly recommend trying out Annie’s Crochet Kit! There are plenty of options and the videos are so helpful that I think a total crochet newbie could do these kits and keep up just fine.
